Nine first-place finishers from the Hawaii finals of the NFL Punt, Pass & Kick contest qualified to participate in the Team Championships on Dec. 2 in San Diego. The group, which includes eight Big Islanders, will compete before the NFL game between the New York Giants and San Diego Chargers at Qualcomm Stadium.
The winners from Dec. 2 will advance to the PP&K national finals. The annual contest allows youngsters to showcase their skills in punting, passing and kicking with scores based on distance and accuracy, according to Hawaii coordinator Brenda Kuamoo.
Forty-five youngsters in various boys’ and girls’ age groups competed for top honors Nov. 2 at Panaewa Park. Their totals were forwarded to the national officials and the youngsters had to finish among the top 4 in their age group among seven sectionals to qualify for the Team Championships.
The qualifiers include Jayla Medeiros, a two-time national champion, and national champion Jason Alani. Both are from Kailua-Kona. Maui’s Laulei Matafa is the lone athlete that is not from the Big Island. They include:
• Boys — 6-7: Leyton Neves (ages 6-7); Nalukea Kamakea (8-9); Jason Alani (10-11); Kelsan Caculidious (12-13); Feleipe Ruval (14-15).
• Girls — Kanoe Piltz (8-9); Jayla Medieros (10-11); Staycia Hoomana (12-13); Laulei Matafa (14-15).
The youngsters must pay for their own trip to the contest in San Diego. If they advance to the nationals, the NFL will pay for their trip arrangements.
Note: There were two additions to the Nov. 2 state final finishers at Panaewa Park. In the boys’ 8-9, Xaige Lancaster placed second with the following totals: Punt, 64-4; pass, 58-10; kick, 48-4; overall 171-2.
In the boys 11-12, Bryant Respicio-Mercardo placed second with these totals: punt, 40-8; pass, 91-8; kick, 64-10; overall 197-2.
Hilo Little League
registration ongoing
Hilo Little League is opening baseball registration for players, managers and coaches interested in the Minor and Major divisions for ages 8-12 from November through Jan. 3.
League play is projected to begin mid-January, and the deadline for manager or coach applications is Dec. 10.

Paradise Roller Girls
to wrap up season
The Volcano Vixens, Mauna Killahz and Hilo Bay Bruisers will battle for the top spot Saturday when the Paradise Roller Girls hold their season-ending bout at Afook-Chinen Civic Auditorium.
Doors open at 6 p.m. and the first of three 30-minute bouts will start at 6:45 p.m.

Tennis benefit on tap
at Edith Kanaka‘ole
Friends of Tomomi and Tomoyuki Furuhata and their children are organizing a tennis event to help defray medical expenses for Urumi, 6, a student at Waiakea Elementary School.
The event will be held from 6-10 p.m. Saturday at Edith Kanaka’ole Multipurpose Stadium.
The event will include a tennis clinic, prizes and a food concession.

Filipino basketball
tourney at Keaau
There will be a Filipino basketball tournament in Keaau on Nov. 29-Dec. 1.
There are five teams entered with room for more. The tournament will be double elimination with 20 minutes halves and a $300 entry fee.
